Self-care looks different for each of us, but this weekend self-care looked like going out with my best friend of over twenty years to celebrate her birthday.
At first, I was seriously debating going anywhere because I was slightly tired and had many ideas I wanted to work on. Once I get into my work, it can be hard for me to stop, but I remembered that I had to take my girls to their first concert the next day. I was not looking forward to that, and it made me realize.
If I got out of the house and went somewhere, I would be doing something for myself.
So I decided to go, and I had a great time. I feel a lot better. Hey, I’m writing, aren’t I?
Thinking back, I am glad that I realized I would likely feel better about doing something for my kids after taking a break and taking a moment to myself, even if the moment wasn’t a private one. I didn’t want an intimate moment; I have enough of those already.
I usually spend my weekends running kids and stealing time to myself, but in the past, I have shared with you all that I am lonesome, or at least I had been. I have a boyfriend now, too, so things are a little different, but I am proud of how I have been working and moving lately, and doing something nice for myself was well deserved.
At that moment, my self-care required being around and enjoying people, loud music, and drinks, but sometimes it involves space and silence. Self-care doesn’t look the same all the time, nor does it look the same for everyone.
Maybe you’ve been struggling with your self-care or feeling conflicted. It could be because you are not practicing the best self-care for yourself. You are simply imitating what you see others doing.
Ask yourself what it is that you really need to replenish yourself and be honest.
You may be surprised.
