“I don’t trust people who don’t love themselves and tell me, ‘I love you.’ There is an African saying which is: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt. Sisterhood helps us dress ourselves emotionally and spiritually so we can offer love to others.” – Maya Angelou
Sisterhood and healing have existed for centuries. There is power in Black women’s circles. Collective support is often the key to unlocking self-confidence, motivation, and a sense of purpose. Women’s circles have been a staple among Black women for generations, from weekly laundry days to hair salons to virtual circles such as Facebook Groups.
The need for safe spaces that allow for expression as well as vulnerability is needed because of the many issues most Black women face. Safe spaces are for those who are seeking advice or just a boost of confidence.
Promoting healing and growth, these spaces assist with mental health wellness due to the many microaggressions and systemic targeting, such as racism and sexism. Especially now, these spaces are needed.
Being able to process grief or to celebrate the accomplishments with someone who looks like and understands your perspective is key.

Having a sisterhood has helped me to become more confident and sure of myself. Having women who are honest and truly look out for what would make me better or even check me when I am wrong is a blessing. I would not trade my circle for the world.
I reached out to the women I am connected to and to my sister circle and asked them to share what sisterhood and healing meant to them:

“I have a small circle of sister/friends. Some are at different spiritual levels. I truly value each one. There’s just an extra closeness for my praying sister/ friends.” – Janet Downs

“My circle of sister/friends have been present for my happiest moments and the times when I struggled the most. We need other women to learn, grow, and fellowship with. It’s a blessing to have friends to “grow” through life with.” – Dee

“We weren’t created to be alone. We were created for connection and fellowship. Having good people around, friends, and family helps to make life better, exciting, and purposeful.” – Amye Mathews

“Sisterhood is so powerful! Whether biological or chosen, sisters bring laughter, healing, and a deeper understanding of life’s challenges. Your support is in your hands.” – Tijania Goodwin

“It’s important because sisterhood seems to be something that is frowned upon nowadays, but it’s one of the safest ways to heal, laugh, and love yourself and others.” – Candis

“Life can be confusing and lonely. The secrets and ramblings of womanhood are why we need sisterhood so that we can learn, love, and grow with others. I keep a small circle with whom I experience life.” – Fancy
