Busy lives call for some form of social life to prevent burn-out. However, being a business owner and always contemplating my next move or strategy to keep the income flowing, I have learned to socialize with a purpose. First, I plan out the events that I will attend whether it’s a book signing, a networking event, or a workshop. I try to commit to two events per month, one during the day and one at night. I do this because I hope to meet a new crowd at each event. I also make sure that at least one of the events, we will be allowed to speak about our businesses. This way when it’s time for one on one interaction, I will attract those who are interested in doing business with me. I love to socialize with a purpose and make long-lasting connections. Here are 7 tips to successful networking:
- Arrive a few minutes early. This allows you to greet other attendees and get a good position in the room.
- Be yourself. You only have one time to make a first impression, so make it great and keep it real.
- Smile. No one wants to approach a stone-faced, uptight person. Be approachable.
- Don’t set high expectations. The goal is to make quality connections and build business relationships.
- Ask thoughtful questions. It’s always best to listen more than you speak when networking and take notes.
- Tell your story. Let the passion for what you do show in the introduction of your business.
- Follow up. Always follow up with a quick email or text within 48 hours of the event and include details you remember about their business.
I hope that you make meaningful and profitable business connections with these tips. Take a moment and ask yourself these questions before attending your next event: Do I have my business cards? Am I ready to respond accurately and passionately about my business? What goals will I achieve by attending this networking event?
