In the original Space Jam, Michael Jordan stepped up to the plate to help Bugs Bunny and his friends. The film portrayed a fictional version of Jordan’s initial retirement from the NBA. When a group of criminal aliens known as Nerdlucks capture the Looney Tunes characters and force them to provide entertainment for their failing amusement park, the Tunes recruited Jordan to help them win a basketball game. A victory would guarantee the Looney Tunes characters their freedom.
A quarter of a century later, Michael Jordan passes the galactic ball to another basketball legend as LeBron James stars in the new movie Space Jam: A New Legacy. In this version, LeBron James is struggling to connect with his young son Dom (played by Cedric Joe). James tries to get Dom interested in athletics, but Dom has a passion for coding and developing video games. Dom’s tech talent is discovered by a humanoid named AI-G Rhythm, played by Don Cheadle. While visiting Warner Bros, AI-G lures LeBron and Dom to the basement server room and traps them in a virtual reality.
AI-G takes Dom and makes him a prisoner. In order to earn his son’s freedom, LeBron must assemble the Looney Toons cast and compete in a winner-takes-all basketball match against the Goon Squad.
For LeBron James, his NBA career has been dominated by comparing his greatness to Michael Jordan. When he accepted the role for Space Jam, it was an open invitation for another Jordan vs. James debate. Critics gave the film negative reviews because they felt the movie was laced with product placement. Despite the poor reviews, Space Jam: A New Legacy surpassed Black Widow as the number one movie in the country as it grossed $31.7 million for their opening weekend.
The movie has received both praise and criticism. For the 16-year-old actor Cedric Joe, being a part of the film was a golden opportunity. “Working with LeBron James was a dream come true. He’s my favorite player. It was mind-blowing being able to be in the same place with him. Seeing what a great person he was and how humble he is…he made filming and being on set every day fun for everyone.”
Space Jam: A New Legacy is a heartfelt father and son story that illustrates how a child and a parent could clash in regards to the child’s future plans. The movie shows how parents have to give their kids an opportunity to tap into their talent and create their own lane. The film delivers an NBA icon, Looney Tunes, family fun, and basketball.
