Our hair is our style, our history (or herstory), our personality, and even our culture. I’ve found it to be a way of bonding and socializing with other women.Â
Jasmine has been wearing hair extensions for over 27 years. She found the industry lacking whenever she tried to find a hair extension company that would deliver excellent customer service and quality products. She has found the entire process exhausting and difficult, often making her frustrated and fearful of buying hair extensions from a new company because of poor experiences from the past that were repeated. She found that most companies were just after her money than actually providing the service they declared. This is why Clark decided to take it upon herself to take the negative experience and turn it into a positive. This is Clark created Herstory Hair. A hair company and a platform would become a supportive environment for women to aid each other with their growth by connecting and encouraging one another by sharing their personal stories. She’s also eliminated the frustration and devastation of trying multiple hair companies, only to be disappointed by the product’s quality and the customer service experience. She has already done that for you! The products are hand-picked from the highest quality of raw Cambodian, raw Indian, and virgin hair extension manufacturers.
Clark is proud of the effort and commitment that went into making this dream a reality, but more than anything, she’s proud of the connections made along the way. The women she has met have been outstanding individuals who have provided immeasurable support and inspiration. Now, returning the joy that they gave to her is a gift that will never stop giving.
Christina: What is your SwagHer? What makes Jasmine, Jasmine?
Jasmine: My SwagHer is my genuine passion for helping others. I am the sister you always wanted. The one that truly listens and is empathetic to your feelings and perspectives but will not lack honesty.
Christina: Why did you start Herstory Hair? What is the story behind Herstory?Â
Jasmine: I saw that there were so many hair companies, but I found it difficult to find a hair company that delivered excellent customer service and quality hair. The companies that I was ordering from was lacking one or the other, I could never get both. I felt like everyone was just out to make a quick buck, never really focusing on the customer herself. I was wasting too much time and money. I was going through a transition phase in my life where I found strength and motivation in other women’s life stories. I thought that it would be a great idea to bring women together through the beauty of hair. So created a platform where women could connect, encourage and uplift one another by sharing their personal stories. I also, through extensive research and trial and error, handpicked some of the best manufacturers of my favorite origins of hair, Thus, Herstory Hair.
Christina: What products do you offer at Herstory Hair?Â
Jasmine: At Herstory Hair, we offer raw Cambodian, raw Indian, and Virgin hair extensions and wigs. We are a new company, but our goal is to eventually branch out into manufacturing our own organic hair care products.
Christina: What do you have to say to some people who think extensions or weave is bad for your hair?Â
Jasmine: Â I know that there are people who think that they are bad for your hair. I would tell them that it’s not bad for your hair if you care for and value your natural hair. If you take care of your natural hair and scalp while wearing the weave, it can be beneficial as I’ve experienced and seen enormous amounts of growth. One of the biggest mistakes is wearing them too tight and for too long without proper care. Your natural hair should not be over manipulated or neglected. There are maintenance requirements that need to be followed.Â
Christina: What are some things women can do to take better care of their hair?Â
Jasmine: One thing I would suggest women can do to take better care of their hair is to wear a protective style from time to time. It does not have to be hair extensions. It could be braids or twists. This gives our natural hair a break from curling irons, flat irons, etc. I would also suggest using organic and natural products on your hair. Use products that are free of sulfates and alcohol. I would recommend using these same products on your natural hair and your extensions. Moisturize not only with conditioners and oils but with water.
Christina: How important is positive affirmations in your life?Â
Jasmine: I am a total believer in mind over matter and in ‘”As we thinketh so that we are” A negative mentality can invite negative experiences. I make positive affirmations apart of my daily ritual. They allow me to be confident in my strengths and abilities. They remind me that each day is another opportunity for endless possibilities for growth, to make money, for new experiences, and meeting new people. I use them for motivation, encouragement, and self-esteem. Before I started doing this, life was much different. I had low self-esteem and was utterly unmotivated. So they are very important to me.
Christina: What is a day in your life like?Â
Jasmine: Â A day in my life is not that exciting. I wake up at 5 am. I meditate every day for about 30 minutes. I am a Registered Nurse, so I go to a job that I love and is very rewarding because I’m helping others. I come home, and I work on my hair business. I may cook or not. Then I go to bed, lol.
Christina: What are three words you would use to describe yourself and your business?Â
Jasmine: Three words that I would use to describe myself and my business would be: transcendence, integrity, and rich. And I don’t mean money!
Christina: Do you have any upcoming events or projects you would like our readers to know about?
Jasmine: Yes, My official launch of Herstory Hair will be January 15, 2021. First, I will kick off a virtual event, Queens Talk by Herstory Hair, on December 19, 2020. This will be an intimate conversation of women sharing their hopes, dreams, lessons, and successes.Â
Christina: Is there anything else you would like to share?
Jasmine: As one of my goals at Herstory Hair is to not only make you look good on the outside but nurture the inside as well. If you see that something is not in order with your inward self, seek to right it. You will find that when the inward is improved, the outward will improve. As you improve yourself, your outward circumstance will change for the better.
