In this special edition of SwagHer Magazine’s Daddy’s Girl column, award-winning journalist and media entrepreneur Tammy Reese opens up about the man who shaped her life: her father, Duane Reese Sr. A proud U.S. Army veteran, beloved grandfather, and devoted husband, Duane’s presence and deep love for his family have left an indelible mark. With his birthday falling on Father’s Day this year, Tammy celebrates the bond they share — from childhood memories and milestone moments to the lessons that still guide her today. This heartfelt tribute is a testament to Black fatherhood and the unbreakable love between a daddy and his girl.

Please tell us about yourself.

Tammy: My name is Tammy Chambliss, I go by Tammy Reese. I am an award-winning journalist and writer, and the founder of Visionary Minds Public Relations and Media. I specialize in helping clients build their press coverage portfolios through online media platforms.

I’m also the co-host and co-producer of two podcasts: Tales From the Media and the NYWIFT Podcast. Recently, I launched a new initiative called The Bliss Section, a mindcare lifestyle brand dedicated to mental wellness.

My professional background includes acting and creative directing, and I’m currently pursuing a degree in Psychology at Empire State University.

We’re excited to learn all about your dad. Please tell us about him.

Tammy: My father, Duane Reese Sr., served 16 years in the United States Army — something I’m deeply proud of. He and my late mother, Donna Reese, raised three children together and built a legacy of love that now includes a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

This year, his birthday falls on Father’s Day (June 15), making the celebration even more special. He’s a gifted singer, a professional and retired chef, a sports enthusiast, and someone who always stays informed about politics.

He’s known for being the life of the party, with a great sense of humor and a huge heart. He was married to my mom for 30 years, and they were together for 45 years. She was and always will be the love of his life.

How would you describe your relationship with your dad?

Tammy: I’ve always been a daddy’s girl. From childhood through my teenage years and even into adulthood, my father has been my biggest supporter. He spoiled me, showed up for every theater play, celebrated every birthday and holiday in a big way, and threw me unforgettable parties I’ll never forget.

As a teenager, like most daughters with protective dads, we had our moments — but his discipline always came from a place of love. He proudly walked me down the aisle at my wedding and was there in the delivery room when I gave birth to my son.

Since the passing of my mother, our bond has overall remained strong through all the grief and transitions. I love him with all my heart, and I especially love that he and my husband are close.

What do you love most about your father?

Tammy: I love his wisdom, his personality, and his resilience. I cherish the conversations we share about life, politics, music, and memories of my mom.

He named my middle name after his own mother, which means a lot to me. I admire the way he has kept going after becoming a widow and how he’s leaning into his faith and attending church. He’s an incredible grandfather, a devoted family man, and a Black man who broke generational stereotypes with grace, commitment, and love.

What does being a daddy’s girl mean to you?

Tammy: To me, being a daddy’s girl means knowing there’s a man who raised you with love, structure, and guidance — and stayed present throughout your life. It’s a blessing I don’t take for granted, especially knowing so many people weren’t raised by their fathers.

Even when we disagreed, I never doubted that my dad had my best interests at heart. His love has always been constant.

Can you share a favorite memory or moment with your dad that you’ll never forget?

Tammy: My birthday is on Veterans Day (November 11), and I’ve always loved celebrating that special day with him since he’s a veteran. I’ll never forget how he made me laugh while I was giving birth — his jokes helped calm my anxiety during labor.

Another unforgettable moment was my wedding day. It was his dream to see me get married, and he was overjoyed.

There are so many more memories over my nearly 40 years of life — holidays, nicknames, family traditions, and the name he almost gave me (which I’ll keep a secret!).

What is one core value or piece of advice your father gave you that still guides you today?

Tammy: He always told me, “Don’t let anyone stop you, and don’t let anyone come between your marriage — not even me.”

That level of respect and protection has always stayed with me and continues to guide how I navigate life.

What would you like to say to your dad this Father’s Day?

Tammy: Dad, I know life hasn’t always been easy, but you’ve done your best. Please give yourself grace — you’ve earned it. You are loved, appreciated, and admired.

Since Mom passed, you’ve carried so much. I’m proud of how you keep going and how you continue to live in a way that honors her and yourself.

You served your country. You raised a family. You were a wonderful husband. Now, let this next chapter of life be about YOU. You deserve it!

Happy Father’s Day. Happy Birthday. I love you forever,

— Your daughter, Tamara
