Fancy: Congratulations on your first location! What motivated you to get a storefront, and how has it been so far?
Patricia: I was inspired to create a tea storefront for True Serenity Tea because of my deep passion for tea and my desire to share it with people internationally and those in the local area. I wanted to provide a space where tea lovers and beginners could come to explore a wide variety of high-quality teas, sample some tea, and experience the joy and serenity of tea. The motivation behind the storefront was to create a physical extension of the premium tea subscription service, allowing customers to not only receive our curated teas at home but also to engage with the tea-drinking experience in a more interactive and immersive way.
Since opening the tea storefront, the journey has been incredibly rewarding and a learning experience. It’s been a wonderful opportunity to connect with tea enthusiasts face-to-face, including beginner tea drinkers, learn about their preferences, and introduce them to unique tea blends they might not have tried otherwise. The storefront has become a hub for me to teach the benefits of tea, where customers can come to taste award-winning teas and deepen their appreciation of loose-leaf teas. The response from customers has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s truly heartwarming to see the smiles and satisfaction on their faces as they discover new teas and share their own tea stories. The storefront has allowed me to combine my love for tea with my passion for connecting with people from all walks of life, bringing it to our culture and people of color, and creating a space of true serenity for our community.
Fancy: When did you first fall in love with tea?
Patricia: I first fell in love with tea when I was a young adult while exploring different cultures during my travels throughout Europe. I was captivated by the meticulous process of preparing and serving tea, how it brought people together, and the calm it provided amidst the busyness of life.
From that moment on, I began delving deeper into the world of tea. I visited tea rooms, talked to tea farmers, and more. I started tasting various types of tea, from classic black teas to delicate green teas and fragrant herbal blends. Each tea seemed to carry a story, a history, and a unique flavor profile. I found myself not only enjoying the taste but also appreciating the art and culture that surrounded tea. I made a vow to bring this experience to the masses.
As time went on, my passion for tea continued to grow. I started incorporating it into my former spa boxes, and from that point on, my customers fell in love with the quality and taste of the teas in the box. The more I learned, the more I realized that tea was not just a beverage but a journey of discovery and connection for myself and my customers.
My love for tea eventually led me to create True Serenity Tea, where I could share this passion with others and provide them with the opportunity to experience the beauty and serenity that tea brings into our lives
Fancy: Did your anxiety inspire you to open a tea business?
Patricia: Yes, my journey into the world of tea and the decision to open a tea business were indeed influenced by my experiences with anxiety. As someone who values the serenity and calm that tea can bring, I found solace and comfort in tea drinking when I struggled with anxiety. My doctor recommended that I should lessen my coffee intake and drink more tea. I found that the process of preparing and savoring tea allowed me to find moments of peace and tranquility amidst life’s challenges.
Recognizing the therapeutic aspects of tea, I was motivated to share this source of comfort with others who might also be seeking moments of relaxation and mindfulness. This inspiration and my passion for tea led to the creation of True Serenity Tea. I wanted to establish a space where people could enjoy exceptional teas and discover the soothing benefits that tea can offer, especially during moments of stress or anxiety.
Through True Serenity Tea, my aim is to provide a beverage and a holistic experience that promotes wellness, mindfulness, and a sense of serenity. It’s a way for me to connect with others who may share similar experiences and offer them a simple yet powerful method to find a moment of calm in their busy lives. I have greatly enjoyed hearing stories from many of my customers and subscribers on how my teas have helped them through rough times in their own lives or within their families
Fancy: So I’m still trying to learn how to enjoy hot tea, and I must ask, do you add anything to your tea when drinking it, or do you drink it straight?
Patricia: Of course! Learning to enjoy hot tea is a journey, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. As for me, it depends on the type of tea I’m enjoying. For some teas, like delicate green or white teas, I prefer to drink them straight to fully appreciate their subtle flavors and aromas. These teas can be quite nuanced; adding anything might overpower their natural taste.
However, when it comes to certain black teas or herbal blends, I do enjoy adding a touch of honey, a slice of lemon, or fresh fruit to enhance the flavor. It’s all about personal preference and experimenting to find what suits your taste buds best. Some people also enjoy a splash of milk in their black tea, which can create a creamy and comforting texture. Ultimately, the beauty of tea lies in its versatility. You can enjoy it plain or customize it to your liking with sweeteners, milk, citrus, or even herbs and spices. It’s all about finding the combinations that bring you the most enjoyment and comfort. So, whether you prefer your tea straight or with a little twist, the key is to savor the experience and discover what brings you the most pleasure.

I’ve been giving back and working with individuals with intellectual disabilities and the homeless for as long as I can remember.
For me, giving back is not just a responsibility; it’s a privilege. It’s a way to share the success of True Serenity Tea with those who might benefit from it the most. I strongly believe that businesses have a unique role in contributing to the well-being of society. By supporting causes that align with our values, we can make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities.

I am a strong, unwavering African-American woman who believes in the power of serving others and brings this belief to everything I create, including my business. I hold my friends and family in great regard. I believe in the power of togetherness through the magic of tea, bringing people together, creating moments of serenity, and promoting mindfulness.
My swagher is also rooted in my strong values of giving back and making a difference in communities. From working with all communities, including individuals with intellectual disabilities, to supporting the homeless, I strive to extend kindness and positivity wherever possible. This sense of purpose and connection shapes who I am and how I approach life and business.
