Crowdfunding campaigns have been on the rise for the past couple of years. You can find a campaign for nearly anything. Some are without a doubt laughable and then you come across one with purpose. This is true for 17-year-old Jouni Prewitt, Founder, and CEO of Black Butterfly Beautiful, a subscription box created to empower, uplift, and encourage young people of color (ages 5 to 19) to embrace who they are. These boxes are sent monthly and curated based on subscriber age, gender and the month’s theme featuring a book, at least one product from a black-owned business and other items to help address underrepresentation, uncover black history, and provide inspiration.
“The main focus is our subscribers, and we want to make sure that we are giving them quality boxes every month from the packaging to the contents on the inside,†according to Prewitt. “I’m so excited about how Black Butterfly Beautiful is growing, but with growth, it requires us to meet the new demand which is where we need help,†she added.
The IndieGoGo campaign launched at the beginning of April and is a quarter of its way to its goal of $10,000. You can choose to donate $10-$1,500 towards the campaign. “As a backer, you don’t just give to the cause, but you benefit as a result of your donation through the many perks we offer,†said Prewitt.  “Our perks include some of our branded items, subscriptions, sponsorships, and the opportunity for black-owned businesses to be featured in a box.â€
It’s definitely refreshing to see someone of such a young age get involved with the betterment of her community. “When you donate to our campaign you are showing every young person of color that you care by helping them to embrace their heritage and themselves,†said Prewitt, “Let’s infuse a feeling of pride and create a nation of strong and self-assured children.â€
