He was last spotted playing the role of Henry Church, a cook/caretaker who agreed to service a woman who was suffering from terminal breast cancer. His services were scheduled for a six month period to match the woman’s diagnosed life expectancy. The time period changes from months to years as Eddie Murphy’s character becomes a father figure to the woman’s daughter. ‘Mr. Church’ is the title of the 2016 film. After the 2016 release, Murphy played the role of a magician as he disappeared from the spotlight.Â
Influenced by Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Bill Cosby, and Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy started his career when he performed in a talent show at the Roosevelt Youth Center in 1976. His performance at the talent show led to work at other clubs. He received his first big break in 1980 when he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live”. His most notable characters on the show were a grown-up version of the Little Rascal’s character Buckwheat, Gumby, and a street-wise children’s show host named Mr. Robinson which was a spoof of the children’s show ‘Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood’. Murphy’s raw talent and charisma were magnetizing. His run with the sketch comedy show ended in 1984 as Murphy looked to move and expand his brand.Â
“Saturday Night Live” provided a platform for Eddie Murphy. While still a cast member, he made his big-screen debut in 1982. He teamed up with Nick Nolte in the film ’48 Hrs’. Murphy hit the stage in 1983 as he released a filmed stand-up special titled ‘Delirious’. Murphy captured his first solo lead in the 1984 action-comedy ‘Beverly Hills Cop’. Due to popular demand, he hit the stage again for his 1987 stand-up concert film ‘Raw’. In 1988 Eddie Murphy along with his best friend Arsenio Hall starred in the timeless classic ‘Coming To America’.Â
Murphy continued to star in movies through the ’90s and 2000s. His most recent release dated back to 2016 with his portrayal of Henry Church. After spending a few years on the couch, Murphy has finally forced himself out of the seated position and back into the Hollywood spotlight.Â
His new 2019 release ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ is a film about the late entertainer Rudy Ray Moore. The film illustrates Moore’s constant chase to be a famous entertainer. Rudy Ray Moore, Eddie Murphy’s character, is an x-rated stand-up comedian who was also a mediocre night club MC and a musician. While listening to vulgar jokes he heard on street corners from an older crowd, Moore decided to enhance the material as he created the “Dolemite”, persona. The new persona assisted him in finding success as he sold recordings of his stand-up routine out the trunk of his car. From that point, he decided to finance his own blaxploitation movies.Â
‘Dolemite Is My Name’ is now playing on Netflix.
The next leg of the comeback is a December 21st appearance as the host of Saturday Night Live. It will be the first time in 35 years. The comedic legend plans on performing some of the sketches that made him famous. “Oh yeah, I’m going to do Gumby. I’m trying to figure out some reason to do Velvet Jones and Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood…And a funny Buckwheat sketch,” Murphy said.Â
Teaming up with Netflix once again, Eddie Murphy is set to star in multiple stand-up specials starting in 2020. He’s looking forward to the opportunity. “The last time I did stand-up, I had no kids, I never been married, and I was 27 years old. Now I’m 58. I have 10 kids. I’ve been married and divorced. So I have so much stuff to talk about,” Murphy stated.
The final leg of the anticipated comeback involves the return of a timeless classic. Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as Akeem in ‘Coming 2 America’. In the film, Akeem learns he has a long lost son in America. Now he must make a return trip to the United States to meet the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda. ‘Coming 2 America’ has a scheduled release date of December 2020.Â
