In 2014 Russell Wilson became the second African American quarterback to win the big game when he led the Seattle Seahawks to victory in Super Bowl XLVIII.

When the Chiefs played the Denver Broncos in week 7, their Super Bowl aspirations were in jeopardy after Patrick Mahomes ran a quarterback sneak. The stadium grew quiet as Mahomes removed his helmet and laid on the ground in pain. After the game, it was confirmed Mahomes suffered a dislocated right knee cap. At first glance, the injury seemed severe enough to end the superstar quarterback’s season. Fortunately, Mahomes didn’t suffer any structural damage as he only missed two games.

At season’s end, the Chiefs were the favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. They started their playoff run against the Houston Texans. The Texans jumped all over the Chiefs to take a 24-0 lead. The Chiefs came roaring back as Mahomes threw for 5 touchdowns. Kansas City would go on to win by a score of 51-31. Mahomes showed the magic as he led the Chiefs to a 35-24 victory and a spot in Super Bowl LIV.

Mahomes earned a trip to the Super Bowl where he would face his toughest challenge of the season. The San Francisco 49ers came into the game with one of the best defenses in the league. Mahomes quickly found out how good the defense was as he was harassed early and often. The 49ers went into the fourth quarter holding on to a 20-10 lead. Patrick Mahomes showed heart and determination as the Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points to win by a score of 31-20. Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP and he placed his name in the record books as the third African American quarterback to win the big game. After 21 years as a head coach,  Andy Reid finally captured that elusive Super Bowl victory.
