The Fight Game: High Rewards Vs High Risks

Boxing is a sport that requires a person to possess good technique, knowledge of the game, and a potent skill set. Many boxing prodigies start the training process as early as five years of age. They come up through the ranks with the dream of becoming an elite boxing star. In the late ’80s to the mid-2000’s, Mike Tyson made the boxing profession more lucrative as he transformed himself into a major pay per view attraction. Tyson generated over $700 million in career earnings.

In the late 2000’s the pay per view star status was passed on to Manny Pacquiao, and Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather have enjoyed distinguished and extremely profitable careers as pay per view stars. These two future Hall Of Famers definitely enjoyed the high rewards of boxing.

Teofimo Lopez is a rising star in pursuit of solidifying himself as an elite pay per view attraction. With a record of 13 wins and no losses, Lopez went into his July 19 bout versus an opponent who was also undefeated. Masayoshi Nakatani had a record of 18 wins and no losses. The Top Rank Boxing event took place at the MGM National Harbor.

Lopez, 21, was the overwhelming favorite, but Nakatani gave him problems. Lopez overcame adversity and collected a victory over a tough opponent. The victory puts the lightweight contender in line for a title shot and places him one step closer to superstardom. If Lopez can win multiple world titles and continues to expand his fan base, he will then have a legitimate shot of being the next pay per view star and also receive the high rewards of boxing.

The July 19 card displayed the different facets of boxing. It showed the possibility of high rewards as Teofimo Lopez is in line to reach that level. The card also showed the entertaining side of boxing as heavyweights Cassius Chaney and Joel Caudle squared off. In the first round, Chaney hit Caudle with a series of punches as Caudle fell through the ring ropes, and out of the ring. It was a shocking moment the fans found both amusing and entertaining. The incident placed Cassius Chaney in trending mode as the knockdown was trending on all social media platforms.

The high risks of boxing made an appearance in the co-main event. The clash was between two undefeated junior welterweight contenders as Subriel Matias battled Maxim Dadashev. It was a grueling fight for 11 rounds as both men landed powerful punches. The match was even until the middle rounds as Matias began to take over. At the end of the 11th, Dadashev’s trainer Buddy McGirt stopped the fight.

The Russian boxer was in bad shape as he needed assistance to exit the ring. He started vomiting before he could reach the dressing room. The 28- year old was transported to the hospital where they discovered Dadashev was suffering from swelling and bleeding of the brain. The boxer underwent a two-hour brain surgery. Doctors had to remove part of his scalp to relieve the swelling in his brain. Dadashev remains in a medically induced coma as his family awaits news of how he responds to the surgery and medication.

Boxing is a calculating and technical sport known as the sweet science. It has a long and distinguished history. Many fighters have the hunger and desire to put their names in the history books.
