The Franchise vs Mr. Irrelevant Super Bowl LVIII

In the 58th installment of the NFL Championship Game, formerly known as the Super Bowl, “The Franchise,” Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs will face “Mr. Irrelevant,” Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers.

With a regular season record of 11 wins and 6 losses, the Kansas City Chiefs started their playoff run with a 26-7 win over the Miami Dolphins. The Chiefs would go on to advance to the Super Bowl by posting road wins against the Buffalo Bills and the top-ranked team in the AFC, (American Football Conference), the Baltimore Ravens.

Finishing the regular season with a record of 12 wins and 5 losses, the San Francisco 49ers secured the number one seed in the NFC (National Football Conference). As a result of earning the top seed in the playoffs, the 49ers were awarded a first-round bye.

In the Divisional Round of the playoffs, the 49ers  held on to defeat the Green Bay Packers by the score of 24-21. The following week, the 49ers faced a great deal of adversity as they were on the brink of elimination.

With a trip to the Super Bowl at stake, the Detroit Lions traveled to San Francisco to battle the 49ers. The Lions were on a mission, as they controlled the tempo of the game, and at the half, the Lions held a 24-7 lead. Brock Purdy and the 49ers rallied back in the second half and posted a 34-31 comeback victory.

Back in 2017 after playing three seasons at Texas Tech and passing for 11,252 yards along with 93 touchdowns, Patrick Mahomes declared for the NFL Draft. With the 10th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected the extremely talented quarterback from the University of Texas Tech.

The Chiefs franchise quarterback led the team to the Super Bowl during the 2019 season as  Kansas City defeated San Francisco by the score of 31-20. Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl LIV Most Valuable Player.

At the conclusion of the 2020 regular season, Mahomes guided his team back to the Super Bowl, but unfortunately, they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Two years later, Mahomes and the Chiefs played in the big game for a third time, and this time, the Chiefs came out on top as they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by the score of 38-35.

As a collegiate quarterback, Brock Purdy was the signal caller for the Iowa State Cyclones from 2018-2021. At the conclusion of his four-year campaign with Iowa State, Purdy finished his career with a total of 12,170 passing yards and 81 touchdowns.

During the course of the annual NFL Draft, the last pick of the draft is tagged with the name “Mr. Irrelevant” due to the fact that most of the players selected last either don’t make the team, or they won’t be there for long. With the 262nd pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Brock Purdy.

Purdy began his pro career as the third-string quarterback behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Due to multiple injuries suffered at the quarterback position, Brock Purdy finished the regular season as the starting quarterback for the 49ers.

At the conclusion of the 2022 regular season, the San Francisco 49ers were playoff-bound, as Brock Purdy led his team to a 41-23 win over the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card game, and a 19-12 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round.

Unfortunately, the 49ers would fall one game short of making the Super Bowl due to another injury at the quarterback position. In the first quarter of their game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Brock Purdy tore a ligament in his elbow, and the 49ers went on to lose by the score of 31-7.

Now a year later, on Sunday, February 11th at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, a healthy “Mr. Irrelevant,” Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are set for a Super Bowl rematch with “The Franchise” Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now that “The Franchise” and “Mr. Irrelevant’s” paths done crossed, will Patrick Mahomes collect his third Super Bowl victory, win his third Super Bowl MVP award, and add to his legacy, or will Brock Purdy legitimize himself as an elite NFL quarterback by leading the San Francisco 49ers to their first Super Bowl victory since 1995?
