Thriving in Her Purpose: Ivi Armstrong-Edlow on Leadership, Legacy, and the HBCU Experience

At the heart of Virginia Union University’s vibrant campus is a changemaker who’s redefining what it means to lead with grace, grit, and undeniable swag. Meet Ivi Armstrong-Edlow, a proud junior majoring in Entrepreneurial Management, and the newly elected 2025–2026 Student Government Association President and Miss Pre-Alumni Council. Originally from Newport News, Virginia, Ivi is a Spring 2025 initiate of the Alpha Eta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and she’s walking confidently in her purpose—rooted in sisterhood, service, and Black excellence.

“Being an HBCU student means learning, growing, and thriving in a legacy built for me,” Ivi shares. “I attend the oldest HBCU in Virginia—Virginia Union University—which has produced icons like L. Douglas Wilder. For me, it’s about flourishing in a space intentionally created to empower Black excellence.”

It’s no surprise that this rising leader is unapologetically herself, both in and outside of the classroom. Ivi’s leadership journey is grounded in authenticity. Whether she’s in a boardroom or a student union meeting, her presence is bold, intentional, and inspiring.

“I bring my swag to campus by being unapologetically myself. I’m the perfect mix of ‘work hard, play hard.’ Whether I’m leading or learning, I make sure my style and energy reflect who I am—even if it’s not what’s trending,” she says.

Raised by a proud Hampton University alumna, Ivi’s HBCU pride was instilled early on. “My mom inspired me. I saw firsthand how attending Hampton transformed her life. Growing up on that campus showed me the importance of community, culture, and Black pride—values that made choosing an HBCU a no-brainer.”

At Virginia Union, Ivi is not just earning a degree—she’s preparing to leave a legacy. With dreams of obtaining a J.D./MBA and scaling the business world, her current studies in Entrepreneurial Management are deeply personal and purpose-driven. “I plan to use my degree to elevate and empower Black-owned businesses. I want to be a resource for rising Black CEOs—providing mentorship, strategy, and support to help build generational wealth,” she explains.

In five years, the college junior envisions herself making strategic moves in business operations. “Virginia Union’s Sydney Lewis School of Business is helping me every step of the way. From hands-on professors to dedicated advisors, I’m being equipped with the tools and connections to reach my goals.”

When asked what she’d tell high school students considering an HBCU, Ivi doesn’t hesitate: “Don’t let society tell you that success can’t come from an HBCU—it absolutely can. An HBCU gives you a community, a family, and a foundation unlike any other. If it feels right in your heart, go for it and earn that degree with pride!”

As she continues to rise, Ivi Armstrong-Edlow remains a testament to what’s possible when passion meets purpose—reminding us all that legacy is not just about what you build, but who you uplift along the way.
