Roy Jones Jr. is a boxing legend. From the mid-’90s to the early 2000s, it seemed as though Jones Jr. was unbeatable. He overwhelmed his opponents with speed, technique, and ring intelligence. During the course of his prime years, Roy Jones Jr. made winning look easy. He would go on to win world titles in four different weight classes. His dominance through the ’90s earned him the honor of being named fighter of the decade.
When you bring up the subject of boxing dominance, Mike Tyson’s name has to be part of the conversation. Tyson’s professional boxing career began with his first 19 wins coming by way of knockout. Twelve of those nineteen knockouts transpired in the first round. In 1986 at the age of 20, Mike Tyson would make history as the youngest boxer to win the heavyweight championship. Tyson would make more history a year later when he became the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles. He dominated the heavyweight division for five years before suffering a shocking defeat in 1990. Tyson would bounce back six years later as he became a two-time heavyweight champion.
Back in 2003, Roy Jones Jr. moved up to heavyweight and won the WBA title. Jones Jr. insisted the only other match he wanted at heavyweight was about against Mike Tyson. The dream fight never materialized back then, but 17 years later, the dream would become a reality. On the night of November 28th, both boxing legends were ready to perform, but a certain hip hop icon would step in and steal the show.
Snoop Dogg stepped into the commentary booth to call the co-main event between former NBA basketball player Nate Robinson and social media star Jake Paul. At the start of round one, Nate Robinson charged at his opponent. His over aggression, poor balance, and lack of technique set up Snoop Dogg’s first verbal jewel. “Slow down, nephew, you got on basketball shoes. Do he got on boxing shoes? Hold on.”
Snoop highlighted how Nate Robinson seemed to be over-anxious. The rapper expressed the fact that Robinson should take his time and be more patient. Robinson continued to charge in, and Paul caught him with an overhand right, which sent Robinson to the canvas. “Oh! Good night, Irene. Lord have mercy,” Snoop Dogg said after witnessing the first knockdown.
At the start of round two, Snoop noticed Robinson was displaying a lot of offense but no defense. The lack of defense hurt Robinson as Jake Paul caught him with a second overhand right that sent Robinson to the canvas a second time. The knockdown was so devastating Snoop Dogg started singing a spiritual hymn. “Precious Lord, take my hand. Lead me on, let me stand.” Surprisingly Robinson got up, but seconds later, Paul delivered a third overhand right, which knocked Robinson out. As Robinson laid in the ring unconscious, the color commentator suggested Robinson could be seriously injured, but Snoop thought otherwise. “Naw, he’ll be alright. Nate from the hood. He’s going to shake that off.”
Fortunately, Nate Robinson was okay, and it was time for the main event. Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. finally shared the same ring. Both fighters are legends, and both are over the age of 50. Snoop immediately shared his vision. “This sh*t is like two of my uncles fighting at the barbecue.”
Roy Jones Jr. didn’t throw many punches per round, but his best punch was the no-look jab. Mike Tyson was the most active as he displayed a potent body attack. Snoop Dogg pointed out how Tyson found his range to unleash the body attack. As Tyson’s punches connected to the body, Snoop yelled out instructions. “Get out of there, Roy! Get them ribs out of there!”
Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. gave the fans a great show. The official result of the bout was a draw. Tyson vs. Jones Jr. may have ended in a tie, but Snoop Dogg was the clear cut winner. His commentating was very entertaining. The night showcased many talented athletes, but Snoop turned out to be the real MVP.
