Fancy: What inspired your interest in psychology?Â
Tyra: I have always had an interest in understanding the mind and how people behave and think. I initially wanted to become a lawyer. However as I studied further into the field of psychology, I realized that this is a broad field that had unlimited growth, and I wanted to learn all that I could to help others in various aspects from Clinical to Media to Cyberpsychology.
Fancy: You’re known as the “NotsoPsychotherapist†because of your different approach to therapy focusing on a reality based approach to current life situations that people experience. Can you tell us more about that?
Tyra: The “Notsopsychotherapist†evolved from the way I incorporate therapy into all aspects of personal and business life. My approach to therapy is reality based or reality therapy. This focuses on realistic responsibility and ownership to the present. Many people focus on past and experience problems with hearing the truth. I assist clients with determining realistic outcomes to everyday problems and accepting of “their realitiesâ€.
Everyone has their own since of “reality and normalcy†which makes each of us different. However when we experience any issues with “changeâ€, this is when problems develop.
Fancy: While some are working to change the stigma attached to mental health and therapy in the Black community, what are your thoughts on the matter as a professional?
Tyra: Mental health and therapy in the Black community has always been a problem due to people not wanting to obtain help for their problems. As a professional, I want all communities to understand the connection that an impaired mental health can have over physical health. For example, people do not understand that when we are stressed, it can have a major impact on our heart and other major medical factors. As a professional, I feel that awareness is important.
