What I’ve Discovered Since Leaning In

What I learned from leaning

I’m leaning in and tapping more into my creativity. I love it, and as I see SwagHer Magazine continue to secure press and guest placements for our clients’ personal and business brands, I recall how I really wanted to work in public relations when I started the mag, as that was my focus in school. SwagHer was actually started by people suggesting I interview others while seeking clients.

However, as I’ve been reflecting. I realized I was basically too afraid to really dive into PR, yet I had all these ideas, and I see and question angles in everything, but I was limiting myself. For years, I read and complained about the hundreds (maybe thousands by now) pitches that I read and wondered what made others decide to go with that publicist’s services and not my own.

But I couldn’t say much when I was too afraid to even act or put myself out there. And to be honest, I did have two really good clients that I lost, and secretly knew it was because I lacked the confidence in my own abilities. That’s an unmatched disappointment, and it left me a little bitter for a while.

I first had to admit where I fell short in all matters, and each time, it was my own lack of confidence.

So now as I’m leaning in and exploring more of what makes me, what do I have to offer the world, I KNOW a big part of it is my creativity and my keenness for details. Again reflecting, I remembered how I questioned what other skills or things I might be good at, and oftentimes, my response was “I’m only good at the computer. I wish I knew how to do something else.”

I really wasn’t giving myself much credit, because now I realize I am a mini beast at the computer. I first began to suspect this when I noticed how people always wanted me to do something for them when they needed it done on the computer. Then as I began really training my team on things I realized I could no longer try to handle all by myself, I discovered that I knew way more about software than I was acknowledging. Working on the Theories & Thoughts podcast allowed me to see that I am a techie while assisting a friend with his law firm showed me that I can adapt, contribute, and improve business outside of what I’m familiar with.

All of these things gave me the confidence to finally say, you know your shit, sis! With that new confidence, I’m finding new and creative strategies to pitch our clients while also building better processes and discovering effective tools and tricks to execute our tasks to better serve them.

Whereas I once felt like I lacked vision, I now see things so much more clearly. I don’t just see where the mag and I are going, but also where the people we’re helping our going. In the words of Rick Ross, “F*ck with me, you know I got it!” Because I really do. I’m excited about the things to come.

I’ve also discovered I’m a techie. Who knew that’s who was brewing all these years I’ve been sleeping on myself?

Since I’ve leaned in, I’ve tapped into an abundance of resources within myself. I’m owning who I am. I love it here!
