Woman Fired from Whataburger for Wearing a Black Lives Matter Mask

Ma’kiya Congious (19), a Texas woman wearing a Black Lives Matter mask, fired from her job at Whataburger in Fort Worth, TX. She has been working for the company since May and filed a discrimination complaint on Wednesday. Customers have been complimenting her mask, but a white customer complained about the cover and threatened to call the hamburger chain’s corporate office when she returned to work. Another chain of events led managers to fire Congious. She was let go because of her race and the mask.

According to the manager, Whataburger provided employees with company-branded covers, but Congious stated that other co-workers wore masks with a Gucci logo or a Mexican Flag. She didn’t decide to leave the job yet, but she wanted to know more options in her complaint. When Congious remained inside of the store, the managers called the police on her. Five police cars arrived on Whataburger’s scene, where Congious left and didn’t return to work. For a lawsuit to take place against Whataburger, somebody must complain at the state’s workforce commission office.
