Meet the creative entrepreneur Alexis Hodges. The guru behind the organic handmade skincare brand ‘Natural state of Mind Essentials’. Alexis is not just the ordinary entrepreneur having to overcome obstacles of sickness which resorted to a large number of hospitalizations. She was not afraid to let others know that she is a survivor of Crohn’s Disease, which is an inflammatory bowel disease. Refusing not to allow this disease to stop her from being a statistic, she opted to fight back and start a brand to help others. Also, as a Biology graduate, we discuss ed her amazing determination and courage. The inspiration behind the brand and why she refuses for co-vid 19 to get her down.

Lawrencia: Can you tell me a bit about your brand and what inspired you to create Natural State of Mind Essentials?
Alexis: In 2007 I was diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease called Crohn’s Disease.  From 2018 to 2019 I spent the majority of my time in the hospital trying to recover from my chronic flare ups. At that moment I made a promise to God that I would use my knowledge to help heal other people suffering from this disease. When I hear the term natural state of mind, it brings me back to the times when I spent my summers attending cooking and science classes at Florissant Valley College. Who knew fifteen years later the internal essence of myself would take me back to my natural state of mind.

Lawrencia: What is your career background?
Alexis: While in college I became a self-taught certified eyelash extensions specialist. In 2017 I graduated with honors with a degree in Biology. Since graduating, I have trained other women on how to start their businesses through one on one training courses. I’ve also worked for a holistic spa company that provided noninvasive services to help improve your body internally and externally.
Lawrencia: Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?
Alexis: Growing up I’ve always wanted to help others. My dream was to become a doctor. The majority of individuals within my immediate family are entrepreneurs. It was a no brainer at this point to know that I would acquire this lifestyle.
Can you tell me about your products and what your brand offers?
Alexis: My brand stands for creating products in the most organic state of physiology while promoting safe awareness of proper absorption. All of my products are handmade, natural fragrances and colors.
My products target consumers with extremely dry and damaged skin. It also improves the appearance of stretch marks, reduces the overproduction of pigments in the skin and aides with the relief of overactive hormones.

Lawrencia: What has been your biggest accomplishment so far?
Alexis: I would say my biggest accomplishment is graduating from college while trying to maintain my health. With this type of illness I have, I was so determined to not be a statistic to this disease.
Lawrencia: Unfortunately, we are in the midst of a global pandemic and it has significantly impacted businesses and the economy. How has it impacted your business?
Alexis: Thankfully it has not impacted my business, it has brought more awareness and increased sales.
Lawrencia: Do you believe businesses can come back from the shattering effects of Covid-19?
Alexis: Absolutely! I think that the best businesses and brands come from tragedies and uncomfortable situations. As long as we keep the mindset that this pandemic is temporary and stay focused on the future, so much success can come from this.
Â
Lawrencia: In these unprecedented times, how are you keeping positive during the lockdown?
Alexis: I’m keeping positive during lockdown by avoiding too much negativity that is being posted on tv and social media. I also make sure to continue my daily routines; I think that’s the only way to not get overwhelmed with what’s going on in the world.
Lawrencia: If you could give 4 tips to boost your well-being during this season. What would they be?
Alexis:
- Keep negativity out of your life!
- Keep people around you that understand that the glass is always half full.
- Get as much rest as possible. People think the pandemic has allowed them the time to stay up late at night but this is the time that we need to get well-rested.
- Use this time to broaden the mind for new activities and hobbies. Get creative with your daily routine
